Madrez Cafè

Scratch-made chilaquiles and waffles in a laid-back Flagstaff plaza spot

(897)
Flagstaff, AZ

About

Madrez Cafè is a small, easy-to-miss breakfast-and-lunch spot tucked into a Flagstaff shopping plaza on East Route 66 — the kind of place regulars know about and everyone else stumbles into by accident. With a 4.6 rating across nearly 900 Google reviews, it's earned a loyal following for scratch-made plates and a laid-back, order-at-the-counter setup where you can watch your food cooked at the bar or grab a table.

What to order

Chilaquiles are the clear favorite here — the chorizo version comes with a real kick, and the carnitas take gets consistent praise for its crispy sautéed chips and well-balanced heat. Waffles are another standout, whether topped with fresh fruit and yogurt or made savory with bacon and fried eggs. Reviewers also call out the pickled onions and the unique artwork on the walls, which gives the small space a bit of local character.

Good to know

  • Hours: 7:00 AM–3:00 PM Sunday through Wednesday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM Thursday through Saturday
  • Location: 1420 E Route 66 #105, in a Flagstaff shopping plaza
  • Service: order at the counter, first-come-first-served seating

It's not a polished sit-down experience — service can run quiet and a few visitors have found portions on the smaller side — but for a solid breakfast on the way through Flagstaff, about 80 miles south of the South Rim, it's worth the stop.

This might be one of the worst spots ever. Wasnt greeted or informed on how to order upon arrival. The employees are very stand offish and cold. Didnt make me feel welcomed in the slightest. The entire restaurant is as big a gas station bathroom and the tables are only big enough to seat 2 people max. Now onto the food, I ordered the Farm Skillet and requested no mushrooms as I am allergic, and yes I did notify the cashier about the allergy. When my food came out I was instantly confused as it was just thrown onto a metal plate and barely took up a quarter of the plate. Once I sat down and got ready to take a bite I noticed that they had removed the bacon from my meal and left the mushrooms in my food! Seeing as im allergic I traded plates with my partner and had her breakfast burrito instead. What a sad sorry excuse of a breakfast burrito. It was dry, cold, and fell apart the second I lifted it from the plate. I ate half of a half before calling it quits and leaving as it was the most BLAND burrito ive ever tasted. You could eat a bag of tortillas from walmart for less than half the price of the burrito and feel more satisfied. Safe to say ill not be returning here! Do better!

Came here with my family and the experience was not great. All of the employees seemed very unhappy to be there and were rude. One of our members ordered the farm skillet with no mushrooms and instead got a farm skillet with mushrooms and no bacon. I also get the farm hash which was made correctly and very yummy! My husband got the pesto avocado quesadilla and it was very bland. There was no hot sauce or salsa available. The restroom also did not have any soap. The restaurant it's self is fine looking, but quite small and narrow. I wouldn't eat here again or recommend others to.

So I am a very open minded person and I like trying the dishes and foods of different cultures. I have eaten plenty of Latin cuisine in my life but I know when I am somewhere the food is authentic and i believe this establishment serves authentic food. My lower score is because I ordered the tangy waffle and the eggs come sunny side up which is fine but my eggs had uncooked white yolk. I know sunny side is a difficult egg to cook especially on one of those large hot grills. When I let the owner know he looked at me very irritated and annoyed and in his language told his employees to remake it. They made me a fresh waffle but took the same eggs and just continued to over cook them but I did ask for over easy and I said it three times. So I basically ate the waffle with spinach on it. I didn’t see or taste any basil. The egg was so over fried it was not edible but the waffle was delicious and light, airy, and flavorful. I got the sense from the staff they were irritated with my concern but with amount of salmonella and food borne illness I don’t see why they are surprised I wouldn’t want to consume any raw uncooked egg white. Many of their dishes have sunny side up eggs so just be aware. The birria quesadillas are delicious.
