About

Yavapai Tavern is the pub next to Yavapai Lodge, and it's built the kind of following that keeps people talking about one thing in particular: the melted elk burger. It shows up again and again in reviews as the dish to order, and with a 4.0 rating across more than 2,600 Google reviews, it's clearly not a fluke.

What to expect

This is a stone-accented bar with a straightforward pub-grub menu, a rotating list of regional craft beers (try a flight if you want to sample a few), and specialty cocktails. Reviewers consistently mention the homemade salsa served with chips, and there's outdoor seating for anyone who'd rather eat with a canyon-country breeze than watch the game on the bar TVs. On weekends, live music adds to the atmosphere. If the tavern's full, a connected dining hall next door offers additional food options, so a wait here rarely means going hungry.

  • Price range: $$
  • Hours: 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM daily
  • Location: Yavapai Lodge, Grand Canyon Village
  • Order: the melted elk burger, chips and homemade salsa

Service gets mixed marks on busier nights and a couple of reviewers found the salad forgettable, but for a casual, affordable meal inside the park after a day on the rim, this is one of the more dependable stops in Grand Canyon Village.

During our visit to the Grand Canyon, my girlfriend and I were looking for a casual place to dine without leaving the park and without spending a fortune. The Yavapai Tavern proved to be a practical and pleasant choice to end the day. I ordered "The Melted Elk," a sort of grilled cheese with an elk burger. The flavor was interesting, intense, and distinctive, although the meat was a bit dry. My girlfriend instead chose the "Smoked Pulled Pork," which was also tasty but slightly less juicy than we expected. The real surprise was the potato salad served as a side dish: fresh, balanced, and very well-crafted, it was one of the highlights of the dinner. The restaurant's great strength, however, is its numerous outdoor tables. After a day spent hiking trails and enjoying scenic overlooks, dining outside and enjoying the last rays of the sun makes the experience particularly pleasant. Overall, a good option for those visiting the Grand Canyon and looking for a simple, informal dinner at a reasonable price, especially considering it's located inside one of the most famous national parks in the world.
