Bright Angel Transportation Desk

Where every Grand Canyon mule ride begins

(25)
Grand Canyon Village, AZ

About

Every South Rim mule ride starts here, not at the corral. The Bright Angel Transportation Desk, tucked into a historic building in Grand Canyon Village, is where riders check in, get weighed, and pick up the gear (packing bag, water bladder, straw hat) before wranglers walk them down to the animals. It's a low-key, practical stop, but it also sets the tone for one of the most memorable ways to experience the canyon.

What happens here

Riders checking in for the Havasupai Gardens day ride or the overnight trip to Phantom Ranch need to arrive by 5:45am the day of, or check in the evening before. Staff weigh each rider, go over the safety rules, and hand out water canteens rigged to hook onto the saddle horn. Reviewers consistently call the wranglers and desk staff out by name for being patient with first-timers and nervous riders alike — the desk holds a 4.6 rating from riders who came through here on their way into the canyon.

Good to know

  • Hours: daily, 5:00am-8:00pm
  • Location: historic building in Grand Canyon Village, with a small museum and family restroom on site
  • Parking: free overnight parking available with a pass from the desk

Mule rides book up well in advance, especially the Phantom Ranch overnight — reviewers strongly recommend reserving ahead rather than hoping for a same-day spot.

Super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were helped by Austin, who took his time and was very considerate of our family. Definitely a positive experience at a busy park!

The Havasupai Gardens Mule Ride was an absolutely fantastic experience! Our wranglers, Remmy and Sofia, were truly awesome. They were incredibly skilled, professional, and genuinely caring throughout the entire ride. I was a little nervous at first, but they immediately put me at ease with their calm demeanor, clear guidance, and constant attentiveness. Thanks to them, the mule ride turned into a memorable and enjoyable experience rather than a stressful one. Remmy and Sofia went above and beyond and absolutely deserve a pay raise! Highly recommend this experience, especially with such outstanding wranglers. I can’t wait to do it again!

Havasupai Gardens Mule Ride This ride is spectacular! We departed at 8am and returned back at 2pm. Our two wranglers Jason and Z were amazing ambassadors for the Canyon and the mules. We were given clear guidance on riding the mules and great commentary about the canyon and flora and fauna! Going down into the Canyon did feel a bit scary, but the mules were confident on their feet and listening to the advice from the wranglers made me feel comfortable, the rest at the gardens was welcome and the packed lunch really hit the spot (even enough fruit to share with our new mule buddies) the path looked completely different on the ride up and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire day!
