Cedar Spring
A backcountry water stop on the Tonto Trail's remote western stretch
About
Cedar Spring is a backcountry water source and campsite along the Tonto Trail's western segment, deep in the canyon at roughly 3,360 feet elevation, well below either rim. It sits between Salt Creek and Monument Creek on the long, rolling traverse of the Tonto Platform, with views out over the Alligator ridgeline and the Monument Creek drainage. This is not a destination reached from a rim parking area — it's a stop for backpackers already committed to a multi-day Tonto Trail route.
What to know
- Cedar Spring falls within Backcountry Use Zone BL6, a Threshold-zone area recommended only for experienced canyon hikers used to unmaintained trail and scarce water.
- Camping here is limited to designated sites rather than at-large camping.
- A backcountry permit from the park is required for any overnight stay.
Like any spring in this stretch of canyon, treat it as a water source to filter and verify on the day, not a guarantee — conditions on the Tonto Platform change with the season.
