About

Fatmans Loop is a well-marked, moderate loop trail on the edge of Flagstaff, climbing through volcanic rock formations to scenic overlooks with wide views back over the city. With a 4.6 rating from over 680 Google reviews, it's one of the more popular close-to-town hikes in the area, and reviewers consistently point to it as an easy sell for families and casual hikers alike.

What to expect

The trail is signed well enough that most hikers find their way without trouble, though a few have mentioned wandering onto a spur near a private road on the west side of the loop, so it's worth paying attention at junctions. Terrain is rocky in stretches from the surrounding volcanic outcrops, and the payoff is a series of overlooks with views across Flagstaff rather than a single dramatic summit. Reviewers describe it as more workout than wilderness — good exercise, good scenery, not overly technical.

  • Difficulty: moderate, described by reviewers as approachable for kids
  • Amenities: parking available on site; no restrooms or trash cans on the trail
  • Hours: open daily, 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Bring water and sun protection — there's no shade relief once you're up among the rock, and nothing to refill from along the way. Pack out whatever you bring in.

This is nice area to hike, but the loop is poorly marked. We went out, did part of the loop, kept going on what we thought was supposed to be the trail, but we got back to where we had already been on the trail so we evidently took some shortcut instead of the real trail.

The name is deceptive. This ain't no fat man's trail. But it is a primo hike with outstanding views of Flagstaff. Medium challenge with its consistent uphill that boasts increasingly amazing places to pause for a steady breath (valley resident up here in the high country, I admit).

Great hike, with some spectacular trees and rock formation along the the trail. The trail can be tricky, at least we found, at times, but we weren't paying much attention as we deep into work discussions. That should not scare you off, the trails were tricky because we took our eyes off the path, easily redirected, and had a great 3 mile, just under 2 hour hike with some good cardio, good leg work, and battling that elevation for a bit. If I lived in Flagstaff that would be my daily hike!
