Inner Basin Trailhead

Flagstaff's classic aspen-season hike into the Peaks

(157)
Flagstaff, AZ

About

Inner Basin Trailhead sits inside the San Francisco Peaks, about 80 miles south of the South Rim, and it's the trail Flagstaff locals point out-of-towners toward every autumn. The route climbs through Lockett Meadow into a bowl of aspens ringed by the Peaks' old volcanic rim, and when the leaves turn in late September and early October, it's one of the most reliable fall-color hikes in Arizona.

What to expect

Reviewers consistently flag it as an easy, well-graded trail — about 10 miles round trip with a steady but manageable incline — though the approach eats more time than people expect. Multiple recent reviews note the drive up the forest road from the parking area can take 1 to 1.5 hours on its own, and on busy fall weekends the gates may close, adding a few extra miles on foot just to reach the trailhead. A midsize SUV without four-wheel drive has been enough for some visitors, but the road is rough and conditions vary by season.

  • Rating: 4.8 stars from 157 Google reviews
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM; closed weekends
  • Managed by: Coconino National Forest (U.S. Forest Service)
  • Best time: late September through mid-October for aspen color

Bring the whole day, not just the hike — between the access road and the walk itself, this is more of a half-day-plus outing than a quick stop.

Road is closed. If it’s such a great trail why don’t they make it easier to park closer.

Great place to spend the night. There are a few campers scattered throughout the woods. Everyone is very friendly. The scenery is beautiful. We stayed here before heading to the Grand Canyon.

The inner basin trail is a nice half-day adventure, depending on which trails you take. The basin has great views and parts of the trail are relatively level. Be sure to bring plenty of snacks and water since this trail is somewhat remote. There are sections without a lot of tree cover, so plan accordingly. Overall it's worth a visit.

Great views during the fall. Pretty good hike. If you are going during the weekend prepare for an extra 3 mile hike up. The gates will be closed.
