Le Fevre Overlook
A five-minute stop with a 7,000-foot view of the Grand Staircase
About
Le Fevre Overlook is an easy pullout on Highway 89A between Kanab and Jacob Lake, sitting above 7,000 feet on the Kaibab Plateau. A short stair-step path leads up to a covered stone pavilion with interpretive displays explaining the rock layers below — and what you're looking at is the Grand Staircase–Escalante, the sweep of cliffs, mesas, and color-banded terrain that geologically connects Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon into one continuous "staircase." The parking area is large enough for RVs, which makes this one of the more comfortable big-rig stops on the drive north to the North Rim.
Worth the stop for
- One of the widest panoramic views on the Kanab–Jacob Lake corridor, with visible burn scars from the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire adding a stark, wide-open quality to the plateau views
- Interpretive panels that make sense of the layered geology without needing a guide
- Sunrise and sunset light on the cliffs, when reviewers say the colors turn red, gold, and purple
- A quiet, uncrowded stop — most people are driving past, not lingering, so it rarely feels busy
There's no water or facilities here (the old vault toilets have been decommissioned), so treat it as a five- or ten-minute leg-stretch rather than a destination stop. The overlook is open 24 hours, and reviewers consistently rate it among the better roadside views in the region — 4.6 stars from hundreds of visitors.

This is a great spot to see the entire Grand Staircase Escalante in the distance. It gives a great perspective of the entire region.

Stopped to take pictures, it does look like a painting! Signs up at the lookout that tell you all about it. It's a pullout with parking.
