Lockett Lake
A dry lakebed clearing in the pines south of the South Rim

About
Lockett Lake sits in the Kaibab National Forest a few miles south of the Grand Canyon's South Rim, reached via Forest Road 310 (Coconino Ridge Road) off Route 64 east of the park entrance. Despite the name, the lake itself is typically dry — what you'll find is a quiet clearing ringed by tall ponderosa pines at around 7,450 feet, used mostly as a dispersed camping spot rather than a water feature or maintained trail. Vehicle access to the old lakebed itself is closed off, so it's more of a forest pull-off than a destination hike.
Good to know
- Outside the park boundary, on Kaibab National Forest land — not an NPS site
- First 100 feet of FR-310 is paved, then dirt; generally passable in a standard vehicle in dry weather
- No water, services, or cell signal on site
- A low-key stop for travelers heading to or from the South Rim, not a scenic overlook
