About

Lookout Studio is the low, rubble-stone building perched right on the rim near Bright Angel Trailhead, built to blend into the canyon edge so completely it almost disappears into the rock. Step inside and it opens up into a small shop stocked with Native American-made crafts and art, plus a few observation windows and an outdoor terrace that puts you eye-level with the drop-off.

What to expect

Reviewers consistently call the view here one of the best on the South Rim — several visitors name it their favorite stop along the rim walk. The building itself is part historic landmark, part gift shop these days, so go in expecting curios and handmade pieces from Native artists rather than a working artist's studio; one recent visitor suggested Kolb Studio nearby for a more hands-on art experience. Rating: 4.7 stars from 381 Google reviews.

  • Hours: daily, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Location: Grand Canyon Village, steps from the Rim Trail
  • Good for: a quick photo stop, souvenir shopping, and rim views without a hike

Note that the studio has closed periodically for renovations, so it's worth checking conditions if you're planning around it specifically — but even from outside, the building and the view it frames are worth the short walk.

Yes you should walk in...I mean there are million dollar views, great help and nice gifts....but my FAVORITE thing is the plaque by the front door with a beautiful passage from the BIBLE and Psalms telling how wonderful our CREATOR is! I think the GC should have many Bible passages shown proclaiming how GREAT GOD Is!

If you are looking for an art studio, go to Kolb instead. The Lookout studio is really just another gift shop (of many). It does have a great view though, and is pretty from the outside!
