About

McKee Amphitheater is an open-air, bench-seating venue near Park Headquarters, reached via the connector trail between the Canyon Rim Trail and headquarters, with capacity for roughly 500 people. It's named for Edwin Dinwiddie McKee, the park naturalist hired in 1929 who established Grand Canyon's ranger-led interpretive programs, wrote its early educational pamphlets, installed the first interpretive signage, and helped start the park's research library — making the amphitheater bearing his name a fitting home for the South Rim's main evening ranger programs.

What's held here

  • Primary evening-program venue on the South Rim between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with programs presented most nights during that window
  • Rotating topics have included geology and wildlife talks

Good to know

  • Cost: free
  • Schedule: not offered every night — check the current schedule posted at the Visitor Center, on village bulletin boards, or the NPS mobile app before heading over after dark
  • Getting there: bring a flashlight or headlamp for the walk back, since this area isn't well lit
