About

Moqui Cave is a natural sandstone erosion cave just north of Kanab that spent an earlier life as a speakeasy before it became one of the area's most unusual roadside stops. Today it houses a rock and fossil collection, a small museum of regional history, and a gift shop, all tucked inside the cave itself. It's an easy, air-conditioned break from the road if you're working your way toward the North Rim on Highway 89, about an hour before you'd start the long push down Highway 67.

What to expect

  • Entrance fee required to see the cave interior, museum displays, and rock collection
  • A short, free hiking trail runs beside the site if you'd rather skip the gift shop and stretch your legs
  • Friendly, knowledgeable staff who are happy to point you toward other nearby stops

Reviewers are split on whether the fee is worth it for the museum alone, but the consensus is that it's a fun, offbeat pit stop with real geologic and pioneer-era history behind the novelty. Rated 4.2 stars from over 2,300 visitors. Open 9 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays.

Visiting Moqui Cave was a highlight of our day. Just experiencing a 40-degree temperature drop (on a hot summer day) was a huge novelty. There were three ladies working when we visited and they were all knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We got a short tour and were able to pick out a geode for them to open. Another highlight was sitting in the saloon and drinking a local Utah root beer. The UV rock collection was extensive and super impressive, something that inspired both of my boys to want to collect more rocks. I highly recommend a stop at Moqui Cave, it is more than worth the small entrance fee!!
