Ranger-staffed resource for Grand Canyon views & educational information, plus a bookstore.

North Rim, AZ

About

The North Rim Visitor Center sits in a historic 1920s building right at the rim, with the kind of big windows and comfortable sofas that make it easy to sit and stare at the canyon for longer than you planned. It's ranger-staffed, so it's the right first stop for trail conditions, viewpoint access, and anything else that's changed recently on this side of the park. There's also a bookstore for maps, field guides, and canyon-specific reading, plus clean, air-conditioned restrooms that reviewers specifically call out after a hot day of hiking. The adjoining Rough Rider Saloon area is a good spot to cool off with a drink once you're off the trail.

Know before you go

  • Rating: 4.7 from over 3,400 Google reviews
  • Hours: listed daily 8am-6pm, but access and closures have shifted since the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire reshaped this part of the park β€” worth a quick call to (800) 858-2808 or a check of grandcanyon.org before you drive up
  • What's nearby: some rim-side pathways and views near the former lodge site remain fenced off during rebuilding, so ask rangers here for the current best viewpoints

Even with the changes, the North Rim's wide-open, uncrowded views are still the draw β€” most visitors who make the drive come away calling it the more dramatic side of the canyon.

So I can't knock it too much because its the Grand Canyon. Living out of the area we had no idea about the fire that took out the Visitor Center. Breaks your heart a little. We saw the burn area coming up but had no idea the extent to which it affected everything. Glad we went though. I originally thought signs on the way up stating the visitor center was closed or was gone would have been helpful, but in hindsight we likely would have turned around and missed the majesty of everything. We were humbled at the sight of the destruction, much like I was after Katrina, or watching the aftermath of a tornado ripping through a small town in Texas. But also you have to know that they are rebuilding. Its a slow process, but it will happen and I can't wait to go back. When we left the north rim, we opted to go check out Point Imperial before we left and I am glad we did. It was every bit what I imagined seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time in my life would be. Make sure you go out to the point when you are there.

Much more interesting and relaxed than the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. After last year's fire, there's no infrastructure at the visitor center, but hardly any visitors!
