Sandy Seep Trailhead

An easy, well-loved trailhead on Flagstaff's north side

About

Sandy Seep Trailhead is a low-key access point on the north side of Flagstaff, and it punches well above its profile — a 4.7 rating across 85 reviews from hikers who keep coming back. It's not a canyon overlook or a marquee stop; it's the kind of trailhead locals use for an easy afternoon or a warm-up before something bigger.

What to expect

The trail network here is mostly flat and forested, easy enough for nearly any age or fitness level, with reviewers calling out red dirt washes that show evidence of monsoon-season runoff and open views toward Elden Peak. From the trailhead you can connect to the Heart Trail, a steeper switchback climb that several reviewers treat as the natural next step once you've warmed up — just know it gets hot fast in summer sun. One review notes road noise near the parking area at the start, which fades as you move into the trees.

  • Best for: families, dog walkers, and hikers looking for an easy-to-moderate outing with the option to go harder on the Heart Trail
  • Best season: spring or fall, per repeat visitors, to avoid summer heat on the exposed switchbacks
  • Setting: forested trail network on Flagstaff's north side, not directly on the South Rim itself

It's a flexible stop — some visitors spend twenty minutes on the flats near the trailhead, others turn it into a half-day loop. Worth knowing about if you're staging out of Flagstaff before or after a canyon trip.

Perfect for a trail run or relaxing stroll. Relatively flat. It is easy to get lost/confused. There are multiple trails branching off in different directions and only one sign at the start of the hike. I was attempting to do the loop but it never really “looped,” just kept heading up Mt Elden, so I turned around and got back to the parking lot the way I came. Dog friendly, quiet, and plenty of parking. The very short road from the highway to the parking lot is washed out and rugged but possible in any vehicle if you’re careful and go slow.
