Seasonal forest ponds tucked into the pines south of the rim

About

Twin Lakes is a pair of small, seasonal ponds on the forested plateau near the South Rim, the kind of water feature more familiar to backcountry hikers and hunters than to day visitors. Sources place it in the ponderosa pine country south of the rim rather than down in the canyon itself, part of a scattered network of earthen tanks and small pools — including nearby Skinner Tank and Twin Tank — that catch snowmelt and monsoon runoff across this stretch of forest. Water levels swing hard with the season: full and reflective after a wet winter, cracked mud or bone dry by late summer in a drought year.

What to expect

  • A quiet, undeveloped forest feature, not a maintained recreation site with facilities
  • Reached by forest road and trail through pine and juniper woodland rather than canyon terrain
  • Best chance of actually seeing water is spring, after snowmelt
  • Worth a stop for hikers already routing through this part of the forest, not a standalone destination
