About

West Fork Oak Creek is the trail Sedona hikers point to when someone wants the town's famous red rock scenery from a completely different angle. Instead of open desert vistas, this path follows a shaded stream through a narrowing canyon, with sheer walls rising on both sides and the creek underfoot the whole way. It's earned a 4.8-star rating across more than 2,300 Google reviews, and it's easy to see why once you're a half-mile in.

What to expect

The trail crosses West Fork Oak Creek repeatedly — reviewers count around 13 crossings — using a mix of stepping stones, logs, and the occasional straight wade. Early sections are wide and well maintained, manageable for most skill levels and doable with kids, though the water crossings take a little care. Push further and the canyon tightens, with towering walls closing in and a quieter, more meditative feel than the open-vista trails around town. Hikers who go the full distance — about 8.3 miles round trip to "the Pool" at the end — describe the final stretch as genuinely worth the extra effort, though it requires wading through cold water to reach it.

Good to know

  • Distance: as short as you like near the trailhead, up to roughly 8.3 miles round trip to the Pool
  • Footwear: reviewers strongly recommend water shoes or an extra pair of socks for the creek crossings
  • Best season: fall for color, though the shaded canyon stays cool and pleasant in summer too
  • Parking: fills early, especially on weekends — arrive early

Managed by the Coconino National Forest, this is one of the more distinctive hikes near Sedona: a cool, green, water-carved counterpoint to the area's red rock overlooks.

One of the most beautiful and generally easier hikes in Northern Arizona.

This is a great trail parking is limited so try to be there early an 11 dollar pass is required and sell at the trail head

I lost count of how many times I hopped across the creek on stepping stones! This canyon is so narrow that the towering walls keep it cool and shaded year-round. The lush greenery and apple orchards at the start make it feel like a different state. It’s an easy, flat walk that’s all about the sights and sounds of the flowing water. Pure zen.

Beautiful, shaded, easy hike. If you can climb down a couple of large steps and up, and step across rocks in the water, no problem.
