Cape Final
A quiet forest walk to one of the North Rim's best-kept overlooks
About
Cape Final Trail is a 4.2-mile round trip on the North Rim, rated easy to moderate, with about 465 feet of elevation change spread over 2 to 4 hours. It starts at a small dirt parking lot on Cape Royal Road, 2.4 miles north of the Cape Royal lot, and stays relatively flat and forested for the first half. There's no real canyon view at the start — you're walking through Kaibab National Forest woodland, and glimpses of the eastern canyon only start breaking through the trees around the halfway point.
What's at the end
The trail terminates at Cape Final, an overlook geologist Clarence Dutton named in 1880 and considered the most interesting spot on the Kaibab. From the rim you can pick out Jupiter, Venus, and Apollo Temples, Vishnu Temple, and Freya Castle, with the Colorado River below and the Painted Desert visible in the distance.
- No water along the trail or at the viewpoint — carry all you'll need
- The overlook itself has little shade, so plan for sun exposure
- Primitive backcountry campsites sit near the viewpoint but require a permit from the North Rim Backcountry Information Center
- Post-fire hazards or weather can trigger temporary trail closures — check current conditions before you go
