About

Cape Royal is the North Rim's classic easy-access viewpoint, reached by a flat, paved path about four-tenths of a mile from the parking lot — roughly 0.8 miles round trip with almost no elevation change. The trail is lined with stone edging the whole way and is level enough that most visitors handle it in under an hour, sunset crowds included.

What you'll see

At the point, the canyon opens into a 270-degree view. On a clear day you can pick out the Colorado River far below, the Painted Desert to the east, and rock formations including Freya Castle and Vishnu Temple across the gorge. Halfway along the main path, a short paved side trail with guardrails branches off to Angels Window, a natural arch worn through a limestone fin.

  • Parking lot has vault toilets and a picnic area
  • Trail is paved and wheelchair accessible
  • Located at the end of Cape Royal Road, about 23 miles from the North Rim developed area

The North Rim reopened for the 2026 season on May 15 for day use, with services still limited as the park continues recovery work — bring your own water, since none is available out here.
