Grand Canyon interior, AZ

About

Cape Royal Trail is a short, paved walk on the North Rim, leading about 0.4 miles from the parking area to the point at Cape Royal — roughly 0.8 miles round trip with minimal elevation change. It's one of the easiest ways to reach a true canyon-edge view on either rim, and the National Park Service rates the surface wheelchair accessible.

What's along the way

Partway out, a paved spur breaks off to an overlook above Angel's Window, a natural arch cut through a rock fin, with the Colorado River's bend at Unkar Delta visible through the opening on clear days. The main trail continues to Cape Royal itself, a narrow peninsula jutting out over the canyon with open views east and west, popular for both sunrise and sunset.

  • Cape Royal Road ends here, 23 miles from the North Rim developed area — no potable water at the trailhead, so bring your own
  • RVs over 22 feet and trailer combinations can't navigate the road in
  • Reachable in 1-2 hours round trip; afternoon lightning is a real hazard in summer

The North Rim reopened for the 2026 season on May 15 for day use, with this trail and scenic drive open; the NPS notes post-fire hazards or weather can still force short-term closures.
