Charybdis Butte

A remote inner-canyon formation near the river confluence

(0)
Grand Canyon interior, AZ

About

Charybdis Butte is a named formation deep in the canyon interior, in the cluster of buttes and temples that rises near the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers. This stretch of the inner canyon, which also holds Chuar Butte and Temple Butte, is some of the most remote country in the park — no maintained trail reaches it, and the terrain is crossed mainly by experienced canyoneers following old unmaintained routes.

Where to see it

You won't walk up to Charybdis Butte on a day hike. Formations in this part of the canyon are typically viewed from a distance, from East Rim overlooks like Lipan Point and Desert View, or glimpsed by backpackers on long unmaintained routes toward Cape Solitude. From the rim, it reads as one more layered silhouette in a skyline of buttes and temples, distinguished mostly by its position relative to its better-documented neighbors.

  • No maintained trail or rim overlook is dedicated specifically to this formation
  • Best appreciated as part of the broader butte-and-temple skyline visible from East Rim viewpoints
  • Sits in remote inner-canyon terrain near the Colorado–Little Colorado confluence

Best Time to View It

Lipan Point and Desert View are accessible year-round from Desert View Drive, so timing here follows general South Rim visiting conditions rather than any trail-specific season.

Tips for Viewing Charybdis Butte

  • From the rim, it reads as one more layered silhouette in a skyline of buttes and temples, distinguished mostly by its position relative to its better-documented neighbors.
  • Pair a Desert View or Lipan Point stop with the broader butte-and-temple skyline rather than trying to isolate this one formation alone.
  • Bring a formation guide or map if you want to correctly identify it among its neighbors.
