Dragon Head
A remote limestone summit in the canyon's North Rim backcountry
About
Dragon Head is a flat-topped summit deep in the canyon's interior, rising to about 7,765 feet on a ridgeline north of the Colorado River. It sits roughly two miles west of Shiva Temple and southeast of Point Sublime, part of a cluster of North Rim buttes locally known as the Dragon Corridor, which also includes the taller peak called The Dragon. Its small, level top formed where erosion left a resistant cap of Kaibab Limestone, and unlike the pine-forested plateau of nearby Shiva Temple, Dragon Head carries only sparse, marginal tree cover.
What to know
- There is no maintained trail to Dragon Head — reaching it means off-trail travel across canyon terrain, with route-finding through cliff bands and heavy brush.
- It's best understood as a distant landmark seen from North Rim viewpoints and roads near Point Sublime, rather than a place most visitors walk to.
- The surrounding Dragon Corridor is remote, exposed, and far from any services — this is backcountry, not a rim-side stroll.
Best Time to View It
Point Sublime requires a rough dirt-road approach, so check current road conditions before planning a trip built around this viewpoint, especially after recent rain.
