Eremita Mesa

An off-trail plateau in the canyon's wild western backcountry

(0)
Grand Canyon interior, AZ

About

Eremita Mesa is a flat, wooded plateau in the canyon's interior below Yuma Point, on the Supai nose of the Esplanade Extension in the Hermit/Boucher backcountry west of Hermit's Rest. There's no maintained trail to it — reaching it means leaving the Hermit or Dripping Spring routes and traveling cross-country up a steep, brush-choked side ravine to the mesa top, then continuing on to Yuma Point itself. The National Park Service classifies this ground as part of its Threshold backcountry zone: non-maintained routes, scarce water, and terrain recommended only for experienced Grand Canyon hikers who can navigate without a marked path.

What to know before going

  • No trail signage or maintained tread — route-finding skills required
  • Water sources in this area are unreliable; don't count on finding any
  • At-large camping is permitted in the use area, but this is remote, exposed terrain
  • Best approached as a side excursion from the Hermit or Dripping Spring trail system, not a standalone hike from the rim

Best Time for This Route

As with any off-trail Threshold-zone route, cooler shoulder-season months are more forgiving than summer heat on exposed, shadeless terrain with unreliable water.
