Freya Castle
A mythologically named butte rising above Unkar Valley, seen from Cape Royal
About
Freya Castle is one of the sculpted buttes visible from Cape Royal on the North Rim, rising about a mile southeast of the overlook above Unkar Valley. At 7,288 feet, its cream-colored summit cap is Coconino Sandstone, laid down as desert dunes some 265 million years ago, sitting on top of the red Hermit Shale and older Paleozoic layers that step down toward the Colorado River. The relief is dramatic even by canyon standards: the butte climbs roughly 3,400 feet above Unkar Valley in about a mile of horizontal distance.
Naming and how to see it
Geologist François Matthes named the formation for Freya, the Norse goddess of love and war, continuing Clarence Dutton's 1880s practice of giving Grand Canyon buttes names drawn from world mythology; the U.S. Board on Geographic Names made it official in 1906. Vishnu Temple stands about 1.5 miles to the north and Wotans Throne about 1.7 miles to the southwest, so all three read as a set from the rim.
- Best viewed from the paved Cape Royal overlook, not reached by any maintained trail
- Summit was first climbed in 1962 by Harvey Butchart and Allyn Cureton, rated class 4 — exposed scrambling, not a hike
- North Rim is day-use only in 2026 with no in-park lodging
Best Time to Visit
North Rim is day-use only in 2026 with no in-park lodging — plan a Cape Royal visit around current seasonal access and daylight hours.
