Grandeur Point
A quiet bend in the Rim Trail with one of the South Rim's best uncrowded views
About
Grandeur Point sits on a small, flat promontory jutting out from the Rim Trail on the South Rim, about half a mile west of Yavapai Point and the Yavapai Geology Museum. There's no parking lot here and no road access — you reach it on foot along the paved Rim Trail, which is part of why it stays quieter than the big-name overlooks even though the view holds its own.
What you'll see
- The full sweep of Bright Angel Trail switchbacking down through Garden Creek to Plateau Point, with 3-Mile Resthouse visible far below
- The Battleship and Dana Butte standing out among the inner-canyon formations
- A glimpse of the Colorado River near where Bright Angel Canyon meets it, plus miles of canyon stretching north toward the wooded Kaibab Plateau
The point looks out along the Bright Angel Fault, the fracture that created the drainage now followed by Garden Creek and the trail itself. Views east toward Pipe Creek and Cedar Ridge are partly blocked by the cliffs of neighboring Yavapai Point, but the open western and northern angles are what make this a favorite low-key sunset stop for people walking the Rim Trail between the Village and the Visitor Center.
