About

The Grand Canyon Greenway is the paved, multi-use path system that lets you get around the South Rim on foot or bike without a car. Inside the park it runs about 4.4 miles between the Village Loop Drive/Hermit Road junction in Grand Canyon Village and the South Kaibab Trailhead off Yaki Point Road, with another roughly 2 miles paralleling Hermit Road between Monument Creek Vista and Hermits Rest. A separate southern leg continues about 6.6 miles from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center down to the gateway town of Tusayan.

What to expect

  • Surface: paved and level — friendly to rollerblades and wheelchairs, unlike the dirt inner-canyon trails
  • Uses: walking, biking, wheelchairs; leashed dogs are allowed, unlike almost anywhere below the rim
  • Connections: links village lodges, campgrounds, the Visitor Center, and shuttle stops to rim viewpoints along the Rim Trail

Good to know

Use this route to reach the South Kaibab Trailhead, Yaki Point, or Hermits Rest by bike instead of waiting on the shuttle, or just to get an easy, flat stretch of trail after a day on steeper terrain.

Best Time to Ride or Walk the Greenway

Spring and fall mornings are most comfortable; the path has little shade, so summer visitors should stick to early morning or evening to avoid peak heat.

Good to Know

  • Fully paved and level — suitable for road bikes, wheelchairs, and strollers, unlike the unpaved inner-canyon trails.
  • Leashed dogs are allowed on the Greenway, one of the few trail systems in the park where that's true.
  • Bike rentals are available near the Visitor Center for anyone without their own.

Getting to the Greenway

Access points include Grand Canyon Visitor Center, Grand Canyon Village near Village Loop Drive and Hermit Road, Monument Creek Vista along Hermit Road, and the town of Tusayan to the south — pick it up at any shuttle stop or trailhead along the route.

What to Expect: Grand Canyon Greenway

About 4.4 miles run through Grand Canyon Village to the South Kaibab Trailhead, roughly 2 more miles parallel Hermit Road to Hermits Rest, and a separate 6.6-mile southern leg connects the Visitor Center to Tusayan — all paved, gently graded, and free of the crowding found on narrow sections of the Rim Trail in peak season.
