Hall Butte
A quiet butte in the shadow of Wotans Throne
About
Hall Butte is one of the lesser-known formations tucked into the maze of buttes and temples below Cape Royal on the North Rim, rising to about 5,528 feet in elevation. It sits in the company of Dunn Butte just to the northwest and shares the same stretch of canyon dominated visually by the much taller Wotans Throne, the massive flat-topped butte that draws most of the attention from the Cape Royal overlook.
Seeing it from the rim
Hall Butte itself isn't a named stop on the Cape Royal Road pullouts, and there's no maintained trail to it — like most of the buttes and temples scattered through this part of the canyon, it's part of the deep-canyon scenery you take in from established viewpoints rather than a destination you hike to. Look for it in the jumble of rock below and around Wotans Throne when you're out at Cape Royal or one of the other North Rim overlooks nearby.
- Best viewed from Cape Royal and the surrounding North Rim overlooks
- No maintained trail or direct access to the butte itself
- Identifiable near Dunn Butte and below Wotans Throne
Best Time to View It
Cape Royal Road access is seasonal, so North Rim operating status determines when this viewpoint is reachable at all.
Good to Know

- Identifiable near Dunn Butte and below Wotans Throne — use the larger, more prominent formation as your reference point.
- Bring binoculars for a clearer look at this smaller, less prominent butte among its taller neighbors.
