Hattan Butte
A remote inner-canyon summit among Grand Canyon's mythologically named buttes
About
Hattan Butte is a named summit deep in the inner canyon, rising to about 5,856 feet on the Bright Angel Point quadrangle near Bright Angel Canyon on the North Rim side of the park. It sits among the cluster of mythologically named buttes and temples in this stretch of the canyon — Deva Temple, Brahma Temple, and Zoroaster Temple line the ridge above Bright Angel Canyon nearby, and Oza Butte rises above The Transept to the west — giving Hattan Butte plenty of dramatic company on the skyline.
What to know
- There is no maintained trail to Hattan Butte itself; it's a backcountry summit identified on USGS topographic maps rather than a visitor destination with facilities.
- It's best appreciated as one of the many named formations visible from established rim viewpoints and inner-canyon trails rather than a hike in its own right.
- Like most named buttes deep in the canyon, it reads best with a topo map or a knowledgeable guide pointing it out against the skyline.
Best Time to View It
Since it's spotted from established viewpoints rather than approached directly, timing follows whichever North Rim overlook or trail you're already using.
Good to Know
- Like most named buttes deep in the canyon, it reads best with a topo map or a knowledgeable guide pointing it out against the skyline.
- Look for it alongside Deva, Brahma, and Zoroaster Temples for the fuller mythologically named cluster.
- A pair of binoculars helps distinguish individual formations in this dense skyline.
