Hayduke Trail #11

An extreme, off-trail traverse of the inner canyon

(0)
Grand Canyon interior, AZ

About

Section 11 of the Hayduke Trail is one of the hardest stretches of an already extreme long-distance route, running roughly 47-49 miles from the Nankoweap Trailhead down to Horseshoe Mesa. This is not a maintained day hike — it's a wilderness itinerary strung together from several inner-canyon trails and off-trail travel, with repeated steep descents and climbs between rim and river.

The route

Hikers descend the Nankoweap Trail, considered the most difficult maintained trail in the park, to Nankoweap Creek and the Colorado River. From there the line follows the river corridor to a required raft or ferry crossing near the Little Colorado confluence, then picks up the Beamer Trail — exposed and cliff-hugging in places — before the Escalante Route's scramble over slickrock and loose scree. The Tonto Trail carries it the rest of the way to Horseshoe Mesa.

  • Extreme difficulty; experienced backcountry navigators only, largely off-trail
  • Requires a river crossing and an NPS backcountry permit for any overnight camping
  • No reliable water or shade for long stretches — plan around known sources on Nankoweap Creek and the river

Best Time to Attempt It

Given the extreme exposure and length, cooler shoulder-season windows are safer than summer heat across the long waterless stretches.
