Day Hike

Headquarters Rim Spur Trailhead

A paved shortcut from park headquarters straight to the rim and the Trail of Time.

(0)
Grand Canyon interior, AZ

About

This trailhead sits at Parking Lot A next to the park's headquarters building on the South Rim, and it's less a wilderness starting point than a paved link between the developed core of the village and the canyon edge. A short spur trail, about 0.4 to 0.5 miles, runs from the headquarters area southwest to the Canyon Rim Trail, with the same spur doubling as a midpoint access portal onto the Trail of Time, the park's geoscience exhibit walk along the rim.

What's here

  • Paved, flat, and wheelchair/stroller accessible the whole way
  • Connects to the Trail of Time, where polished rock samples and interpretive markers use a 1-meter-per-million-years scale to walk you through the canyon's geologic history
  • Ties into two shuttle stops, so you can walk out and ride back (or vice versa)
  • Passes near McKee Amphitheater on the way to the rim

It's a good low-effort option if you want rim views and some real geology context without committing to elevation change, and a practical way to skip a stretch of parking-lot walking by connecting straight to the shuttle system.

Best Time to Walk It

Paved and flat, this route is usable year-round and works well as a low-effort option regardless of season.
