Hermit Road Greenway Trail

A flat, paved rim walk past six overlooks along historic Hermit Road.

Grand Canyon interior, AZ

About

The Greenway Trail is the paved, level stretch of the Rim Trail that runs along Hermit Road on the South Rim, roughly three miles of flat asphalt that mostly follows the alignment of the historic 1913 Hermit Rim Road. It's open to walkers, wheelchairs, and bicycles, which makes it one of the easiest ways to cover real distance along the canyon edge without route-finding or elevation gain to worry about.

What's along the way

  • Six overlooks and several rest areas are spaced along the route
  • Pima Point, roughly midway, is one of the better spots on the rim to hear the Colorado River — Granite Rapids can carry up canyon on a quiet day
  • The Hermit Road shuttle (Red Route) runs March through November, so you can ride out and walk back, or the reverse

Private vehicles are restricted on Hermit Road during shuttle season, which keeps the corridor quieter than the main South Rim viewpoints. There's no shade or water along the path itself, so treat it like any other rim walk and carry what you need, especially in summer heat.

Best Time to Walk It

Private vehicles are restricted on Hermit Road during shuttle season, which keeps the corridor quieter than the main South Rim viewpoints — a genuine advantage for a peaceful walk during peak season.

  • Combine a walk out with the shuttle back to cover the full route without doubling your effort.
