About

Hopi Point sits on Hermit Road on the South Rim, jutting farther out into the canyon than the other overlooks along this stretch, which is why it has such an unobstructed view in almost every direction. From the railing you get five separate glimpses of the Colorado River far below, along with miles of stacked mesas and temples receding toward the horizon. Because the point faces due west, it's the spot most people pick for sunset in this part of the park — it fills up fast in the evening — and the open eastern view makes it a quieter, equally good sunrise option.

Getting there

  • Reachable via the free park shuttle (Hermit Road route) most of the year
  • Also reachable on foot along the paved Rim Trail, about 2.5 miles from Grand Canyon Village
  • Private vehicles are allowed on Hermit Road only in winter, when the shuttle doesn't run
  • Restrooms and a wheelchair-accessible viewing area are on site

The point was originally called Rowes Point, after Sanford Rowe, an early guide who ran trips down Bright Angel Trail, before it was renamed for the Hopi Tribe.

Best Time to Visit Hopi Point
