About

Lookout terrace is the outdoor viewing deck built onto Lookout Studio, the stone building architect Mary Colter designed in 1914 for the Santa Fe Railway, perched on the rim just west of El Tovar Hotel. Two stacked exterior terraces step down the cliff edge, built from native limestone to blend into the rock below, giving a roughly 180-degree view across the Bright Angel Fault and the Battleship formation, with the Colorado River visible about 4,000 feet down on clear days.

What to expect

  • Viewing telescopes mounted on the terrace for a closer look into the canyon
  • Right on the Rim Trail, an easy, flat walk from Bright Angel Lodge or El Tovar
  • Inside the building: a gift shop, with Lookout Studio itself functioning as both historic landmark and overlook

Good to know

  • Cost: free to visit the terrace and building
  • Access: stone steps and some unrailed edges — watch kids closely
  • Best for: sunset, when low light picks out the canyon's layered rock especially well

Best Time to Visit Lookout Terrace

Sunset is the standout time — the terrace faces a wide sweep of the canyon that lights up as the sun drops, and it's an easy, flat walk back to the village afterward.

Good to Know

  • The terrace has unrailed sections at the true edge — keep a close eye on kids and pets.
  • Viewing telescopes are mounted on the terrace for a closer look at canyon features.
  • It's a working gift shop as well as a viewpoint, so expect some foot traffic inside the building.

Getting to Lookout Studio

Walk the paved Rim Trail west from Bright Angel Lodge or El Tovar Hotel — a short, flat, wheelchair-accessible stretch, also reachable via the Village (Blue) shuttle route.

What You'll See

Two stacked limestone terraces cantilevered over the rim give a roughly 180-degree view across the Bright Angel Fault to the Battleship formation, with the Colorado River visible about 4,000 feet below on a clear day — one of the more dramatic close-up vantage points in the village area.
