Mencius Temple

One half of the canyon's philosopher-named Twin Buttes, seen from Point Sublime

About

Mencius Temple is one of the canyon's paired buttes known as the Twin Buttes, rising to about 7,001 feet a short distance from its taller neighbor, Confucius Temple. Both sit deep in the canyon south of Point Sublime on the North Rim's Kaibab Plateau, part of the cluster of formations that geologist Clarence Dutton named for religious and philosophical figures in the 1880s, with the names officially adopted in 1906. Mencius Temple takes its name from the Chinese philosopher considered the most important Confucian thinker after Confucius himself — fitting, given it stands beside the butte named for Confucius.

Where to see it

There's no trail to Mencius Temple itself; it's a formation you view rather than a place you hike to. Point Sublime, reached via a rough unpaved road on the North Rim, is the best-known vantage for taking in the Twin Buttes and the surrounding Hindu Amphitheater. The North Rim is open for day use in 2026, with the campground operating since June, though there's no overnight lodging in the park this season.

Good to Know

  • Names were officially adopted in 1906, part of the same naming wave that gave the canyon its Confucius, Buddha, and other philosophically named buttes.
  • Point Sublime's rough-road access means fewer visitors than the main North Rim overlooks — check current road conditions before attempting it.
  • Look for Confucius Temple nearby to spot both Twin Buttes together.
