Mohave Point
Rim-hugging overlooks with a rare clear line down to the Colorado River
About
Mohave Point sits on Hermit Road about 6.6 miles west of Grand Canyon Village, and it's one of the better places on the South Rim to actually see the Colorado River rather than just imagine it's down there. The overlook is really a cluster of several small viewpoints strung along the rim rather than one platform, so you can walk a short distance between them and get slightly different angles on the same drop. Directly below is a jagged red sandstone mesa known as The Alligator, and on a clear day you can pick out Salt Creek, Granite, and Hermit rapids churning in the river far below. Across the canyon, named formations including Tower of Set, Horus and Osiris temples, Tower of Ra, and Isis Temple rise from the far side.
Good to know
- From March through November, Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles — reach Mohave Point by the free Hermits Rest shuttle, on foot, by bike, or commercial tour.
- Private cars are allowed on Hermit Road in winter.
- A popular sunset spot — the multiple separate overlooks tend to spread crowds out more than at nearby Hopi Point.
