Monument Creek Trail
A cairn-marked descent to a reliable desert stream and the river beyond
About
Monument Creek isn't a rim-to-river trail on its own — it's a backcountry destination reached by descending the Hermit Trail and then following the Tonto Trail east across the Tonto Platform. The creek takes its name from a freestanding pillar of rock known as Monument Creek Pinnacle, standing roughly 250 feet tall near the drainage, visible as you drop down through the sandstone ledges toward the streambed. By the time you reach the creek itself, at around 2,950 to 3,000 feet elevation, you've descended through the sandstone layers into the Vishnu Schist, the canyon's oldest exposed rock.
What to know before you go
- This is an unmaintained, cairn-marked backcountry route, not a maintained frontcountry trail — a backcountry permit is required for overnight camping at Monument Creek.
- Monument Creek is one of the few reliable water sources along this stretch of the Tonto Trail, though hikers should treat it before drinking.
- A spur of roughly 1.5 miles follows the creek downstream to its confluence with the Colorado River at Granite Rapids.
Expect steep, exposed switchbacks, boulder-hopping, and narrow, out-sloping tread — this is inner-canyon terrain for experienced, well-prepared hikers, not a casual walk.
Best Time to Hike to Monument Creek
Expect steep, exposed switchbacks, boulder-hopping, and narrow, out-sloping tread, so cooler shoulder-season months are considerably more forgiving than summer heat on this exposed route.
