Pipecreek Vista
A quiet first stop on Desert View Drive with condor thermals and canyon-wall forest below.
About
Pipe Creek Vista is the first pullout you hit heading east from Grand Canyon Village on Desert View Drive, and it's worth the stop before the bigger crowds farther out. The overlook frames the Pipe Creek drainage between Mather and Yaki Points, with Douglas fir clinging to the shaded canyon walls below — a cooler pocket that draws more bird activity than the open rim nearby, especially during spring and fall migrations. Watch the thermals here and you have a decent shot at spotting a California condor riding the updrafts.
Getting There
- Small paved pullout on Desert View Drive, reachable by car or the free Kaibab/Rim (Orange) Route shuttle
- Sits on the paved Rim Trail, 1.4 miles east of Mather Point and about 0.9 miles west of the South Kaibab Trailhead
- Wheelchair-accessible viewing area with interpretive exhibits; the trail segment is also open to bicycles
The lot is small and fills up by mid-morning, so this one's easiest early or as a quick walk-up from the Rim Trail rather than a drive-and-park midday stop.
