Rim Trailhead
Step onto the South Rim's easiest canyon-edge walk
About
This is an access point onto the Rim Trail in the Grand Canyon Village area of the South Rim, where the trail runs along the canyon edge for roughly 13 miles between South Kaibab Trailhead and Hermits Rest. From a spot like this near the village, you can walk in either direction along the rim without committing to the full distance — short out-and-backs between viewpoints are the normal way people use this trail.
What to expect
- The trail sits around 7,000 feet elevation and stays close to flat through the village section, with a paved surface that's wheelchair and stroller friendly
- Near-constant canyon views, with the Colorado River and inner-canyon rock layers visible from several points along the way
- Water and restrooms are available at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and through the historic village area; the free shuttle system connects to viewpoints along the rim, so you don't have to walk back the way you came
Sections of the trail west toward Hermits Rest turn to dirt with steeper grades and steps, but from a village-area starting point you're on the easiest stretch the park has to offer.
Best Time to Walk From Here
The village section stays close to flat and paved, so this stretch works well any time of year, even when heat rules out longer inner-canyon plans.
