Trailview Overlook
Where you watch the Bright Angel Trail disappear into the canyon
About
Trailview Overlook is the first stop west of Grand Canyon Village on Hermit Road, and it earns its name: from the rim here, and especially from the stairs leading down to the viewing area, you get one of the clearest looks at the Bright Angel Trail anywhere on the South Rim. The switchbacks drop roughly 3,000 feet toward Havasupai Garden and the inner gorge, and on a clear morning you can watch mule strings and hikers working their way down in miniature. Turn around and you'll see the historic district of Grand Canyon Village laid out below, with the San Francisco Peaks rising on the horizon to the south.
Getting there
- Free shuttle: the Hermits Rest (Red) Route stops here, outbound only, running May through September
- On foot: the paved Rim Trail connects Trailview to the village, about 0.7 miles each way
- Bicycles are allowed on this stretch of Hermit Road as well
It's a short stop, not a hike, which makes it an easy add-on to a Rim Trail walk or a first orientation to how the canyon's trails actually work before heading anywhere below the rim.
Best Time to Visit
Clear mornings offer the best visibility onto the Bright Angel switchbacks and mule strings below; any time works well since this is a short, easy stop rather than a hike.
