Transept Trail

A rim-hugging North Rim trail, closed by fire damage outside the campground

Grand Canyon interior, AZ

About

The Transept Trail traces the rim of The Transept, a deep side canyon on the North Rim, linking the North Rim Campground toward the former Grand Canyon Lodge site. In normal years it's a 3-mile round trip with about 100 feet of elevation change, an easy-to-moderate walk through aspen, Gamble oak, and ponderosa pine with views across to Deva, Brahma, and Zoroaster Temples on the far side of the side canyon, plus an ancestral Puebloan ruin partway along the route.

Current status

The Transept Trail was burned in the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire and remains closed for 2026, with the exception of the short stretch that runs along the rim inside North Rim Campground, which stayed open when the campground reopened in June. Check the park's North Rim status page before planning a hike here — the rest of the route is closed while the park assesses fire damage, and there's no timeline yet for full reopening.

What to Know
