Tritle Peak
A burnt-red sandstone remnant framed from a quiet North Rim overlook
About
Tritle Peak is a freestanding remnant of Coconino Sandstone perched on Hermit Shale slopes, rising to about 8,388 feet on the Walhalla Plateau's East Rim. The shale beneath it runs a deep burnt-red, so the whole formation reads as a dark, eroded tower against the sky rather than a rounded canyon wall. It sits roughly 0.4 miles northeast of Roosevelt Point, one of the North Rim's overlooks between Bright Angel Point and Cape Royal.
Where to see it
You don't hike to Tritle Peak itself — you view it from Roosevelt Point, reached by a short, easy trail down from a small roadside parking area to a set of benches at the overlook. From there the peak anchors a wider scene that includes Colter Butte and Swilling Butte, with Kwagunt Creek's drainage opening up below and, on clear days, an unbroken stretch of the Colorado River's gorge to the north. Tree cover and the shape of the point itself narrow the view in a few directions, so it's a quieter, more framed outlook than the big South Rim panoramas.
- Viewed from Roosevelt Point via a short, easy path from the pullout — no technical hike required
- Named for Frederick Augustus Tritle, a 19th-century Arizona territorial governor
Best Time to View It
