Walhalla Glades Trailhead
An old road into a quiet corner of the North Rim
About
Walhalla Glades Trailhead sits along Cape Royal Road on the North Rim, marking the start of a long out-and-back route that follows a former forest road down the length of the Walhalla Glades peninsula. The path descends gradually through rolling, open terrain mixed with wooded stretches, passing junctions with the Francois Matthes Trail and the Walhalla Connector before making its closest approach to the rim and ending near Cape Royal, opposite Angels Window. It's an isolated route with light foot traffic, and stretches of it can be hard to follow where the old roadbed fades into meadow.
What to expect
- Sources disagree on exact mileage for the full route, so treat this as a long day's out-and-back rather than a quick stroll — turn around well before you're tired
- The peninsula's warm canyon updrafts create a milder microclimate than the surrounding North Rim forest, which is part of why the area supported Ancestral Puebloan farming centuries ago
- No water sources along the way; the North Rim's summer 2026 season is day-use focused following 2025 fire damage, so plan around gate hours on Cape Royal Road
