Whites Butte
A Redwall-capped summit off the Boucher Trail, where the canyon opens toward the river
About
Whites Butte is a 4,860-foot formation rising near the western end of the South Rim, where the canyon opens toward the Colorado River and Granite Gorge. Its flat summit is capped by a platform of Redwall Limestone, with the older Supai, Tonto Group, and Vishnu basement layers stacked beneath it down toward the river — a cross-section of most of the canyon's geologic history in one formation.
Getting a look at it
Whites Butte sits just off the Boucher Trail, which drops from Hermits Rest through the Redwall on a steep, difficult descent to reach the saddle at its base before continuing down to the Tonto Platform. It's considered one of the easier butte summits in the park to reach on foot, but only relative to other inner-canyon scrambles — the approach from the rim is long, exposed, and unshaded. There's no reliable water along the way; the nearest source is Boucher Creek, well below the saddle.
- Reached via the Boucher Trail from Hermits Rest, not a maintained rim-side viewpoint
- Summit is a Redwall Limestone platform with some vegetation
- No water between the rim and Boucher Creek
Best Time to Attempt It
There's no reliable water along the way; the nearest source is Boucher Creek, well below the saddle — cooler shoulder-season months are considerably safer given this exposure.
