About

Wotans Throne is the massive, flat-topped butte that dominates the view south of Cape Royal on the North Rim. At 7,721 feet, its forested summit sits roughly 5,200 feet above the Colorado River and is capped by 700 feet of Kaibab Limestone over 300 feet of cream-colored Coconino Sandstone, sand dunes laid down some 265 million years ago. A long fin of rock connects it toward Cape Royal, which is why the butte reads as an almost architectural presence from the overlook rather than just another canyon wall.

Seeing it

Most visitors see Wotans Throne from the Cape Royal Trail, an easy, paved half-mile path from the Cape Royal parking area (about 0.8 miles round trip) with minimal elevation change and interpretive signs along the way. From the same overlook you can pick out Freya Castle, Vishnu Temple, and Krishna Shrine nearby, along with the Desert View Watchtower across the canyon on the South Rim.

  • Geologist François Matthes named the butte for Wotan, the Germanic god also known as Odin, continuing Clarence Dutton's practice of giving Grand Canyon formations mythological names; the name was officially adopted in 1906
  • Reached via Cape Royal Road, about 23 miles from the North Rim developed area

Best Time to Visit
