Holiday Inn Resort the Squire at Grand Canyon by IHG

Resort-style comfort minutes from the South Rim

Grand Canyon Village, AZ

About

The Holiday Inn Resort The Squire at Grand Canyon sits in Tusayan, just a few minutes' drive from the South Rim entrance — close enough that guests routinely head out for sunrise or sunset without an early alarm. It's a big, resort-style property built for families, with a lobby that reviewers describe as open and inviting, complete with a fireplace that makes a good spot for a morning coffee.

What's on site

The hotel leans into the family angle: an indoor pool, arcade credits handed out at check-in, a gift shop, a restaurant, and a fitness room. Reviewers consistently mention wild elk wandering the grounds — a small but memorable bonus for anyone staying near the park. Rating: 3.7 stars from 369 Google reviews.

What to expect

Staff get repeated praise for being friendly and accommodating, and rooms are generally called clean and spacious — some with a king bed plus a bunk bed, useful for families. That said, a handful of recent reviews flag inconsistency between rooms (housekeeping misses, a shower with hot-water trouble), so it's worth mentioning anything that's not right at check-in rather than living with it.

  • Location: Tusayan, minutes from the South Rim entrance
  • Good for: families and travelers who want resort amenities without staying inside the park

Given the proximity to the park, rooms here can book up well ahead of peak season, so it's worth reserving early if your dates are fixed.

Nice clean rooms. Great to stay to visit Grand Canyon. Buy your tickets and take the bus. Drops you right at the visitor center. The resturant is pricey with little choices for dinner.Make sure to get breakfast passes with your reservation. Buffet only.

I picked this hotel due to its location to the Grand Canyon, on-site restaurants and other amenities. We were very disappointed when we arrived at about 8:30 pm and found that the resort had NO POWER. Apparently this was a PLANNED power outage that the staff didn’t bother to tell incoming guests about. I had even texted with Guillermo at the front desk at around 4 pm, and he didn’t mention the power outage. So at 8:30 pm, we were hungry and tired and it was really too late to change our plans. Further, in a location that had PLANNED power outages, the staff of this hotel should certainly be better prepared for them. For example, battery-operated lights could be provided in rooms. As it was, the rooms were pitch black (very dangerous, especially for people with mobility issues) There was no working refrigerator to store medicine. There was no light, air conditioning, hot water, no soap stocked in the shower (not related to power outage, just bad service) no elevators for those with accessibility issues, and no food available on the premises. I booked a “resort,” and ended up showering in the dark with cold water and no soap. The worst part of this experience is that the hotel charged FULL PRICE for this experience. They claimed the power outage was “out of their control” and “not their fault.” (Quotes from the front desk staff.) I understand this, but the outage also was also out of MY control and not MY fault. Why should I have to pay full price for this? I believe this Holiday Inn is engaging in fraud. They should not be charging for basic things like hot water and electricity when they can’t provide it. They should certainly not be charging for amenities like on-site restaurants, pools, and an arcade when none of these things are available. The conditions of this hotel and the actions of the staff reflect very poorly on the Holiday Inn. If you work hard for your money and value your vacation days, steer clear from this hotel and from the Holiday Inn corporation.

One of the worst hotel experiences. Front desk doesn’t pick up the phone when we called to report a door issue. Since this place is comprised of several buildings, we had to walk quite a ways just to reach the front desk. Door to the bathroom was jammed and did not close at all. The only positive experience was the nice handyman who came quickly to fix it (with our help). Sofa seats stained and dirty. And the worst part: After a long days hike at the Grand Canyon, the shower had NO HOT WATER! Just intermittent lukewarm water. In short, this “resort” hotel sucks big time.
