Phantom Ranch is the only lodging at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, tucked along Bright Angel Creek near the Colorado River, roughly a 7-10 mile hike below the South Rim on either the Bright Angel or South Kaibab Trail. There's no road in — you arrive on foot, by mule, or on a river trip, and the stone-and-wood cabins and dorms run by Xanterra have been the reward at the end of that descent for over a century. What to expect

Simple cabins and dormitory bunks, a canteen serving family-style breakfasts and steak dinners, and the kind of exhausted-hiker camaraderie that comes from everyone having earned their spot the same way. Guests rave about the food and staff — one described family-style steak dinners as "worth the price," with seconds on everything but the steak and baked potato. A few note the canteen's snack-bar hours can run tighter than posted, so don't count on a walk-up drink outside a reserved meal.

When I visited in previously, the snack bar was welcoming, friendly, and lemonade was $5 and a free refill. It was a pleasurable and social experience for those traversing the canyon. Lemonade is now. $7 each no refill! My gf and I stopped in on our way back to the S Rim after doing R3 and were excited about getting snacks and drinks. The sign said they were open until 6:30 and it was 5:30. We walked in and the snack bar was closed but there were about 15 people dining. Immediately, before we said anything, Staff asked “Do you have a reservation? Otherwise, you’re not supposed to be in here.” What an incredibly rude way to state they are no longer selling items. Correct the operational hours stated and instruct staff how to address those visiting to spend money. Don’t be excited about this place. Something happened in the few years.

Experienced Phantom Ranch for my first time last week (first week of June) and omg…what an amazing experience. I wasn’t able to get a room at the ranch originally, so I was camping at Bright Angel the first two nights, then a cabin opened up and I got to stay at the ranch and spend an extra day down in the canyon. Always check if anything opens up while you’re down there! The staff were all so wonderful. You can tell they love their job and feel lucky to be working there. I booked breakfast two mornings and the steak dinner three nights in a row. Sooo so good. Worth the price. It’s family style, so you can eat until you’re full (minus the one steak and one baked potato per person). Many meal times they have additional openings as well, if you don’t originally book in advance, so it’s worth asking. I’d love to come back for Thanksgiving or Christmas one year.

My husband and I entered the lottery every month for eight years and finally got to stay at Phantom Ranch- July 2026. We did a rim 2 rim 2 rim hike over four days and got to stay at Phantom Ranch our first and third nights. If you enjoy the backcountry, this is the place for you. It is not easy to get to but worth it if you are an experienced hiker. The accommodations were perfect, the staff were awesome and the food was amazing! We loved recovering our tired legs in the Colorado River and getting to lay our heads at the canyon floor- finally!

We lucked in to a cabin at PR during our backpacking trip, thanks to someone’s last minute cancellation. So we moved over from our reserved campsite at Bright Angel Campground. We were thrilled to get the opportunity to stay in this historic, amazing lodge. Our cabin (#6) had two sets of bunk beds. Air conditioning was a godsend because the temp was 105. The shower house was clean, with towels, shampoo, conditioner, ands body wash. The hikers stew dinner in the canteen was delicious. Love, love, love Phantom Ranch and the friendly crew who work there.

This was a once in and lifetime trip! A group of 4 of us hiked down the north rim, stayed at phantom ranch, and hiked out on the south rim the next day! The vibes and food were delicious. Everything was clean and inviting. It was a mentally and physically challenging hike but we are so thankful to be able to experience the beauty of the Grand Canyon!
