The Historic Grand Canyon Hotel

Arizona's oldest hotel, still welcoming guests on Route 66

Williams, AZ

About

Tucked into downtown Williams on Historic Route 66, The Historic Grand Canyon Hotel is the oldest hotel in Arizona — and it doesn't hide its age, it leans into it. Guests consistently mention the same things: a grand staircase, a book-lined library, and a lobby with 24/7 coffee where the front desk staff will happily talk your ear off about the building's history. It's earned a 4.5 rating across 825 Google reviews, an unusually strong showing for a small independent property.

What to expect

Rooms are older-building charm rather than chain-hotel uniformity — reviewers single out the two-bedroom suite (room 14) as a standout, and several call the place "small but well-appointed." A hot breakfast, including boiled eggs and cinnamon rolls, is served in the original ballroom and is included with a stay. The library doubles as a wine-and-coffee lounge, and the hotel has also hosted small weddings in its event spaces.

  • Location: 145 Historic Rte 66, Williams — walkable to the town's restaurants and shops
  • Rating: 4.5 stars (825 reviews)
  • Good to know: recently renovated while keeping its 19th-century character; breakfast included

Williams sits about an hour from the Grand Canyon's South Rim and an hour from Sedona, making this a solid home base for exploring both — and reviewers say the hotel itself, not just the location, is worth the stop.

This hotel is beautiful! Family owned. Super nice folks at the front desk. Great parking. Right in the middle of Williams with restaurants and shops all around. And the Grand Canyon just an hour away. Don't waste your stay at a chain motel (like I almost did) when you can stay in this sweet historic hotel. Everything was top notch. I'll definitely be back.

This place is fantastic. My daughter and I stayed with her two little boys while we explored Williams on our Rt 66 adventure in June. The building is amazingly authentically detailed for its history. We just loved ! Breakfast was delightful pastries, fruit, yogurts, cereal - served in the magnificent old ballroom. All around wonderful place.

There are some things you must know before staying here. The parking is a dirt lot behind the building. Once you unload luggage you must climb a bunch of stairs. There is no elevator and no help. Noise is an issue being very old and in a popular location. Floors are wavy and nothing is level. Room 13 has dead people for artwork along with a demon possessed baby picture. It is an experience if that’s what you want but you should know what to expect.

My husband and I visited the hotel today just to see this old building. The women who greeted us and are in charge here were extremely friendly, accommodating and informative. If we had extra time to stay another night away, we would do so here in this amazing hotel. The history, architecture, attention to detail and cleanliness, along with the wonderful service is just outstanding!

My daughter and her husband got married at the Historic Grand Canyon hotel in Williams this past May. We couldn’t have asked for a better venue. Everything was absolutely beautiful, from the lobby to the ballroom and library. The sleeping rooms were clean and very comfortable too. Sarah, Theresa and all of the staff were amazing. They made everything perfect and made us feel comfortable as if we were family. I can’t say enough positive things about the entire experience. If you’re looking for a unique wedding experience you need to check it out!
