Trailborn Grand Canyon

A Route 66 motel reborn, an hour from the South Rim

(257)
Williams, AZ

About

Trailborn Grand Canyon took a mid-century motel on Route 66 — most recently a Red Roof Inn, originally the Thunderbird — and rebuilt it into a boutique stay with a western-chic edge. It's part of Marriott's Bonvoy Outdoor Collection (not a Marriott-branded property, but points and status are honored), and holds a 4.4 rating from 257 Google reviews, with guests consistently calling out the attention to detail in the renovation.

On site

  • Motel-style parking right outside your room, plus four Tesla charging stations
  • Pool and hot tub, free bike rentals, and outdoor games
  • Camp Hall, an indoor gathering room with shuffleboard and board games, with weekend activities like bingo
  • Fire pit with s'mores kits, and an onsite restaurant, Miss Kitty's Steak House, known for steaks sourced from a local ranch

Location

The hotel sits right on Route 66 in Williams, about a one-hour drive to the Grand Canyon's South Rim entrance, and is next door to Canyon Coaster Adventure Park with Bearizona a short drive away — a solid base for a South Rim visit or just a stop along a Route 66 road trip.

Reviewers are clear that this is a boutique motel experience, not a full-service resort — set expectations accordingly and the value comes through, especially with the free breakfast, friendly staff, and easy walk to Williams' downtown.

Very nice hotel. The rooms were very nice. The area around the hotel was a small town feel. Easy and safe to walk around town. The food and drink were expensive, but it’s a hotel.

Our stay was great! This hotel is precious and embraces the Route 66 vibes and Grand Canyon atmosphere. This is an older MOTEL that has been updated to modern conveniences with keeping the vibes. There was a bit of a musty smell in our room, but not horrible. We opted to stay on the second level and there was most definitely a weak spot in the floor that creaked when we walked. The beds were comfortable enough and the extra touches like the radio, bag cooler and bikes you could borrow made this stay extra special. Not to mention the games in the camp hall and special events, wow! Williams is precious as a whole and we enjoyed every moment of our stay on our Route 66 road trip!

Unique quaint hotel. They were very accommodating, I loved the charm. The walk to the town was very easy, and the shops and restaurants are nearby. Loved the town! Will stay here again!
