Grand Canyon Shuttle FAQ
Do I need to use the Grand Canyon South Rim shuttle?
It depends where you're going. Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30 — during that window, the free Hermits Rest (Red) Route shuttle, walking, or biking are the only ways to reach viewpoints like Hopi Point and Mohave Point. Most of the rest of the South Rim (Village, Market Plaza, Yaki Point, South Kaibab Trailhead) has very limited or no parking, so the shuttle is the practical way to get around even where it isn't strictly required.
What time does the Grand Canyon shuttle start and stop running?
Grand Canyon shuttles aren't on a fixed clock schedule like some parks — buses generally start running about an hour before sunrise and continue until about an hour after sunset, so exact times shift through the year and are posted daily at the Visitor Center and on the park's shuttle bus schedule. Build in extra buffer near closing time rather than assuming a fixed last-bus time.
Which shuttle route goes to Yaki Point and the South Kaibab Trailhead?
The Kaibab Rim (Orange) Route, which runs year-round from the Visitor Center out to Yaki Point and the South Kaibab Trailhead. There is no public parking at the South Kaibab Trailhead at all, so the shuttle (or walking/biking the Greenway Trail) is the only way in.
Can I drive to Hopi Point and the other Hermit Road overlooks?
Only in winter — roughly December through February — when Hermit Road reopens to private vehicles. From March 1 through November 30 it's shuttle, bicycle, or on foot only, using the seasonal Hermits Rest (Red) Route.
