The only lodging that puts you within walking distance of the rim, trailheads, and the free shuttle. El Tovar is the flagship historic hotel (roughly $250-500/night) and books out fastest — reservations open 13 months ahead through Xanterra's Central Reservations, and El Tovar and the historic Bright Angel Lodge rim cabins are worth booking the day that window opens for any date May-September. Bright Angel Lodge also has more affordable standard rooms (from around $97-110 with a shared or private bath). Maswik Lodge and Yavapai Lodge sit a short walk back from the rim in the pines and run more moderate (roughly $95-220 depending on season and room type). Kachina Lodge and Thunderbird Lodge are the modern, motel-style options (roughly $220-280) directly on the rim near El Tovar. Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of the canyon, is a separate 15-month advance lottery, not a same-system reservation.
About 7 miles (1 mile past the actual South Entrance Station) south of the park boundary, with conventional hotel chains at similar prices to in-park lodging. The advantage is availability when in-park lodges are sold out, plus more restaurant choice — the tradeoff is a short drive in, and the NPS recommends entering before 9 AM or after 3 PM in peak season to skip the entrance-station queue.
About an hour south of Grand Canyon Village via I-40 and AZ-64, Williams is the budget-friendly, Route 66 option with the widest range of chain hotels and restaurants. It also has its own draw — the Grand Canyon Railway departs from Williams and drops you directly in the Historic Village, which turns the drive itself into part of the trip.
Xanterra opens reservations 13 months ahead, on the 1st of the month at midnight Mountain time online (7 AM by phone). El Tovar and the historic Bright Angel Lodge rim cabins can sell out within that same window for any date from May through September, so book the day the window opens if you want a specific date.
Not usually — Tusayan hotel rates run similar to the more moderate in-park lodges. The real advantage of Tusayan is availability once in-park lodging is sold out, plus a wider choice of chain restaurants, at the cost of a short drive in through the South Entrance.
Williams is the most affordable option and has the most hotel and restaurant variety, about an hour's drive from Grand Canyon Village. It's also where the Grand Canyon Railway departs, so many visitors base there and ride the train in rather than drive.
Maswik and Yavapai sit a short walk back from the rim among ponderosa pines and are more moderately priced. Kachina and Thunderbird are modern, motel-style buildings directly on the rim next to El Tovar, priced higher for the location. All four are run through the same Xanterra reservation system as El Tovar and Bright Angel Lodge.
